Google Smart Router
9% of attempted payments ($5.4B) have been declined across Google from July ‘17 - July ‘18
Every transaction that goes through Google is routed to a processor and configured so the processor understands the transaction and make an authorization decision.
Rolls and responsibilities
1 PM
1 Eng Lead
1 PMO
Hypothesis
With a smart payments gateway, Google puts itself in a position to increase customer satisfaction through higher conversion while driving down operational costs.
Goals
Leverage machine learning to optimize the routing of each transaction event for the highest probability of success.
Empower analysts, operations engineering/pm, finance, leadership and clients to safely and efficiently understand, optimize, triage, and experiment
Improve the cost of processing, processor performance, and overall quality by introducing processor competition anchored in auth rates, loss, cost, and latency.
Solution
Invent a tool that leverages automation (driven by machine learning) and manual experimentation (driven by analysts) to optimize each transaction’s configuration and routing for the best chance of success.
Result
User testing with Analysts, Product Managers and Engineers has been positive. Our next steps is to optimize the experience for external merchants.
